Prevention of viral hepatitis B and C in wartime

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army, the risk of infection with viral hepatitis B and C has significantly increased, as the number of cases of injuries, sexual violence, and untested blood transfusions have increased.

The risk of infection increases due to unprotected sexual contact, especially those accompanied by violence, condom damage, and slipping.

It should also be noted that a high risk of infection is possible through contacts during professional activities: medical workers, military personnel, and rescuers who may be injured or have contact with blood or other biological fluids of people with unknown infection status.

During the war, the number of surgical interventions significantly increases, including those that may be provided in inappropriate conditions, which in turn can lead to an increased risk of infection with parenteral viral hepatitis.

As long as hostilities continue, it is very difficult to adhere to the prevention of viral hepatitis, as situations, where the risk of infection is increased, are repeated.

So, how to protect yourself?

Get vaccinated against viral hepatitis B. It is believed that a three- or four-dose vaccination regimen is optimal. Protection lasts for at least 20 years and probably for life. That is why WHO does not recommend the revaccination of people who have fully completed the three-dose vaccination regimen.

Use single-use items (syringes, needles, drip systems, gynecological examination mirrors, etc.) and personal items (toothbrushes, razor blades, contact lenses);

Use of personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, aprons, etc.);

Avoid contact with blood and biological fluids of other people;

Use sterile reusable instruments (manicure, dental, surgical, laboratory, piercing, tattooing, etc.);

Practice safe and protected sex (using barrier contraception);

Be sure to undergo testing, and in case of a positive result - apply for treatment.
